A new door opens up on EmmyHD Design unveiling the latest collection of concepts intended for physical products! From Greeting Cards to Christmas Wrapping and elegant Stationary, the Print Design page includes several 3D mock-ups that allowed me to learn more about tailoring my art for the printing process.

HOW DOES DESIGNING FOR PRINT CHANGE THE GAME?

Colour Modes: Understanding colour modes is essential to ensure the accuracy of your brand across the web and print, as no two hues are quite alike. The design's RGB colours must be converted to the CMYK colour model for the printer to most closely replicate what is seen on screen. A standardised Pantone palette may also be utilised for higher consistency when printing at various departments.

Size and Scale: The dimensions of your designs must also account for the printer and the way in which the physical product will come together. Important guidelines like margins help contain the main design elements within a safe zone for an appealing and organised composition. Bleeds account for extra space surrounding the design that is intended to be cut off without leaving an unsightly white border, allowing the finished piece to appear truly polished.

Immediate Communication: Designing for the web comes with many useful features that enhance the communication of a concept, sometimes relying on audience interactivity such as with buttons, links, and animations. When all you have to work with is a static print, the art must be able to clearly speak for itself. Making use of fundamental principles like hierarchy, balance, repetition, white space, and contrast will allow these designs to shine no matter what.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOCK-UPS

Visualisation: The design can be seen in its intended format through a high quality 3D mockup, proving how successfully it has managed to meet the client's criteria and the personal goals of the designer.

Client Feedback: Displaying a completed design on a mock-up to the client sets them up to provide much more reliable feedback on details such as alignment, layout, and colour choice. The idea suddenly becomes much more tangible and easier to approve of.

Material Testing: Before committing to the expenditure of materials, decide if they really are the right fit and see how the specific design interacts with different textures and finishes. More confident decision making can then commence with a reduced risk of backtracking and time loss.
